After a dismal 2024 season on offense, the Pittsburgh Steelers are prioritizing upgrades across the board, from quarterback to wide receiver and running back. While addressing the quarterback position remains a top priority, Pittsburgh is also in desperate need of a reliable receiving target to pair with George Pickens.
General manager Omar Khan attempted to bolster the receiving corps last offseason but failed to land a top-tier playmaker before settling on Mike Williams, whose production fell short of expectations. Now, the Steelers find themselves in a similar situation heading into 2025, and this time, they are expected to make a strong push for a proven veteran in free agency.
According to FanSided’s Nick Villano, five-time Pro Bowler Amari Cooper is a prime candidate to land in Pittsburgh this offseason.
“We think that ‘someone’ will be the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Villano predicted. “It’s truly a perfect fit for player and team, but the only question is whether the contract fits the Steelers’ expectations.”
Cooper, a model of consistency throughout his career, has recorded seven 1,000-yard seasons in 10 years. However, 2024 was a down year, as he managed just 547 yards while splitting time between the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. Still, his drop in production can largely be attributed to quarterback instability in Cleveland and the challenge of learning a new system midseason in Buffalo.
Assuming Cooper can return to form, he would provide the Steelers with a much-needed veteran presence and a strong one-two punch alongside Pickens. Additionally, he could serve as a mentor, helping to guide the talented but mercurial Pickens as he continues his development.
Will the Steelers Outbid the Bills?
According to Spotrac, Cooper’s market value is projected at two years, $28.4 million—a price Pittsburgh can comfortably afford, as they are set to have $40.7 million in cap space (Over the Cap). Meanwhile, the Bills, who are reportedly interested in retaining Cooper, are $14.1 million over the cap, making it difficult for them to match offers from other teams.
If the Steelers are serious about upgrading their receiving corps, Cooper presents an ideal solution—an experienced, high-upside veteran who could help elevate an offense in dire need of playmakers.
