Brett Baty Could Start 2025 in Triple-A After Pete Alonso’s Return
The New York Mets secured Pete Alonso for at least one more season, but his return could have a domino effect on the Opening Day roster.
Baty’s Future in Limbo
According to FanSided’s James Nolan, third baseman Brett Baty may not make the Opening Day roster.
“Stearns and the Mets front office still regard Baty as an intriguing young player. The 25-year-old has a smooth swing and doesn’t strike out often. However, keeping him up to start the season wouldn’t benefit him.”
Where Does Baty Fit?
🔹 Alonso’s return keeps Mark Vientos at third base, leaving Baty without a starting role.
🔹 He’s taken reps at first, second, third, and outfield, but isn’t a defensive standout anywhere.
🔹 His MLB production hasn’t matched his minor league success:
- MiLB: .289 AVG / .889 OPS
- MLB: .215 AVG / .614 OPS (169 games)
Trade Bait or Depth Piece?
🚨 If Baty doesn’t carve out a role by midseason, he could be on the trade block.
🔹 The Mets could use him as a versatile depth piece in case of injuries or struggles.
🔹 A hot start in Triple-A could earn him a call-up.
What’s Next?
With the Mets prioritizing contention, Baty’s future is uncertain. He may need to prove himself in Triple-A or become part of a midseason trade package to address other roster needs.
