Detroit Lions Face Crucial Offseason as Kevin Zeitler’s Free Agency Looms

The Detroit Lions are gearing up for a pivotal offseason following their unexpected divisional round exit against the Washington Commanders despite entering the playoffs as the NFC’s No. 1 seed. General manager Brad Holmes is now tasked with reinforcing the roster while facing the challenge of retaining key contributors, including veteran right guard Kevin Zeitler.

Zeitler, who signed a one-year deal with Detroit last offseason, emerged as one of the top interior offensive linemen in the league during the 2024 season. With his consistent performance, the 34-year-old guard is expected to attract significant interest in free agency.

Pro Football Focus analyst Mason Cameron suggests that the Minnesota Vikings could be a prime destination for Zeitler. “Zeitler will be 35 years old when he hits the open market, but his long track record of sustained success across multiple franchises should warrant looks from decision-makers,” Cameron noted.

The Vikings, who allowed the NFL’s highest interior pressure rate (18.8%) in 2024, are in dire need of reinforcements on the offensive line. Starting right guard Dalton Risner delivered a strong season but is set to become an unrestricted free agent. If Minnesota fails to retain Risner, Zeitler could be a smart acquisition for general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to solidify the line.

During the 2024 season, Zeitler started 16 games for the Lions, logging 577 pass-blocking snaps. He allowed just 18 pressures and earned an impressive 87.2 run-blocking grade, ranking third among guards league-wide. Although he surrendered five sacks, his reliability and high-level play have cemented his status as one of the most effective guards in the NFL.

For the Lions, retaining Zeitler would ensure stability along the offensive line as they aim to rebound from their postseason disappointment. However, if Zeitler decides to move on, the Vikings are poised to be a top contender for his services. With both teams vying for playoff success, this offseason battle for Zeitler could have significant implications for the NFC landscape.
