The Golden State Warriors made a major splash ahead of the trade deadline, acquiring former Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler in a blockbuster move. The trade was aimed at easing Stephen Curry’s offensive burden, but Butler’s age, personality, and fit within Golden State’s system make this a bold, high-risk addition.
While the Warriors are done making trades, they could still make moves on the buyout market to bolster their depth for a playoff push.
Josh Richardson Could Be on Golden State’s Radar
One intriguing name linked to the Warriors is Josh Richardson, who started the season with the Miami Heat before being traded to the Detroit Pistons in the multi-team Butler deal. Detroit later flipped Richardson to the Utah Jazz in a separate trade for Dennis Schröder.
However, Richardson’s stay in Utah will be short-lived. According to The Salt Lake Tribune’s Andy Larsen, the Jazz plan to waive Richardson, making him available for contenders looking for veteran depth.
A Low-Risk, High-Upside Move?
Statistically, Richardson is enduring one of the worst seasons of his career, averaging just 4.0 points per game on 28.9% shooting from the field and 27.3% from three. However, his past performance suggests he could still be a valuable piece.
The 6-foot-5 guard had a breakout season in 2018-19, averaging 16.6 points per game for the Heat, and while his three-point shooting has fluctuated, he has shown flashes of being a capable floor spacer and defender.
Since leaving Miami, Richardson has bounced around the NBA, playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and New Orleans Pelicans before returning to the Heat this season. While not a game-changer, he could provide versatility and experience off the bench for Golden State.
Will the Warriors Make a Move?
Adding Richardson wouldn’t be a blockbuster signing, but his experience and ability to play alongside stars like Curry and Butler could help the Warriors down the stretch. With Golden State looking to maximize their championship window, signing Richardson as a low-risk, veteran depth piece could be a logical next step.
Now, the ball is in the Warriors’ court. Will they strengthen their rotation before the playoff grind begins?
