James Wiseman Traded to Toronto Raptors in Last-Minute Deal

In a trade completed just minutes before the NBA’s Feb. 6 trade deadline, the Indiana Pacers have sent former No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman to the Toronto Raptors, along with cash considerations.

Wiseman’s Journey: Fourth Team in Four Years

This marks Wiseman’s fourth team in as many seasons, an unfortunate development for the highly-touted center who was once seen as a potential franchise cornerstone.

  • Drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2020 (No. 2 overall pick)
  • Won an NBA Championship with Golden State in 2021-22
  • Traded to the Detroit Pistons in 2022-23
  • Signed with the Indiana Pacers in summer 2024
  • Now heading to the Toronto Raptors

Wiseman’s Injury Woes and Future in Toronto

Wiseman’s time with the Pacers never truly got started, as he suffered a torn Achilles in his Indiana debut on Oct. 23, 2024, against the Detroit Pistons. The injury ruled him out for the entire 2024-25 season, delaying what could have been a fresh start in a promising young frontcourt.

Now, Wiseman joins a rebuilding Raptors team that already features a talented core:

  • Scottie Barnes (2024 All-Star)
  • Brandon Ingram (acquired from New Orleans in 2024)
  • RJ Barrett & Immanuel Quickley (acquired from New York in the OG Anunoby trade)

While Wiseman won’t suit up this season, he could still play a role in Toronto’s future, assuming he makes a full recovery.

What This Means for the Raptors & Pacers

  • Toronto Raptors: The Raptors take a low-risk chance on a former top prospect. If Wiseman recovers well, he could provide much-needed size and depth alongside Jakob Poeltl.
  • Indiana Pacers: The Pacers clear a roster spot and receive cash considerations, but the move also signals that they are not counting on Wiseman as part of their long-term plans.

For Wiseman, 2025-26 could be a make-or-break season, as he looks to salvage his once-promising career with yet another fresh start in Toronto.
