Milwaukee Brewers Could Pursue Dylan Cease to Bolster Rotation

The Milwaukee Brewers have had a quiet offseason, losing key players like Wade Miley, Frankie Montas, and Willy Adames without making any major additions. With Corbin Burnes gone and Freddy Peralta stepping in as the new ace, Milwaukee still needs another frontline starter to solidify the rotation.

One potential target? Dylan Cease of the San Diego Padres.

Bleacher Report Proposes Brewers-Padres Trade for Cease

In a trade proposal by Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report, the Brewers could land Cease by sending left-hander DL Hall and catcher Jefferson Quero to San Diego:

Proposed Trade

Brewers receive: RHP Dylan Cease
Padres receive: LHP DL Hall, C Jefferson Quero

Milwaukee acquired Hall from Baltimore in the Corbin Burnes trade, but he has yet to establish himself as a reliable starter. Quero is one of the top catching prospects in baseball, but the Brewers have William Contreras locked in behind the plate.

Cease, a Cy Young runner-up in 2022, has posted a 3.40 ERA since 2022, making him one of the top available arms.

Why This Move Makes Sense for Milwaukee

The Brewers expect Brandon Woodruff back at some point in 2025, but their current rotation depth remains thin. Right now, the Brewers’ best starters are:

  • Freddy Peralta
  • Tobias Myers
  • Nestor Cortes

“It’s not a great trio, but it would be a perfectly solid foursome if Cease were to be placed at the head of the pack,” wrote Rymer.

Cease is set to hit free agency after 2025, and he is projected to land a five-year, $108 million deal. Milwaukee likely won’t pay that, but they could view Cease as a one-year rental to push for contention.

Will the Brewers Make a Move?

If Milwaukee wants to remain competitive in the NL Central, adding a proven arm like Cease would be a significant step forward. With Spring Training approaching, it remains to be seen if the Brewers will pull the trigger on a major trade to reinforce their rotation.
