Commanders’ Frankie Luvu Fined for Illegal Hit After Missed Roughing the Passer Call

Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu has been hit with a $16,883 fine following his controversial hit on Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff during last week’s divisional playoff game. The NFL ruled that Luvu’s blow to Goff’s head and neck warranted the fine, though no penalty was called on the play at the time.

The incident occurred in the second quarter, when Luvu intercepted a pass from Goff and returned it for a touchdown. As Goff attempted to make a play, Luvu lowered his head and delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit. Goff was immediately taken off the field to undergo concussion protocol but was cleared to return to the game shortly thereafter.

Despite the hit, no roughing the passer penalty was called, and the Commanders took a 24-14 lead after Luvu’s pick-six.

During the Fox broadcast, former NFL referee Mike Pereira pointed out that Luvu should have been penalized for a 15-yard roughing the passer infraction, which would have negated the touchdown. However, considering the effectiveness of the Commanders’ offense against the Lions’ depleted defense, it’s likely Washington would have scored regardless.

While the missed call is still a sore spot for Detroit fans, the league’s decision to fine Luvu has at least acknowledged the illegal hit, even though it came too late to impact the outcome of the game.
