Deion Sanders Rejects NFL Coaching Future ‘I Couldn’t Take It’

Colorado Coach Deion Sanders Doubts NFL Coaching Role Amid Rumors

Deion Sanders, one of the most talked-about names in football, has once again shut down rumors linking him to an NFL coaching job. While speculation about Sanders making the leap to the NFL continues to swirl, the Colorado head coach is adamant that it’s not in his future — at least, not in the way people expect.

In an appearance on his TV show We Got Time Today, Sanders spoke candidly about why he believes coaching in the NFL isn’t a good fit for him. During the conversation with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, Sanders explained that the way NFL teams practice would be a deal-breaker for him.

“I couldn’t coach pro ball,” Sanders said. “That’s why I say, I couldn’t coach — I know it was cute — but I couldn’t coach pro ball, because the way they practice, the way they go about it, I couldn’t take it.”

He added, “As a man, and as a football enthusiast, and I care about the game. The game is still providing for Troy and I, so there is no way I could allow that to happen on my watch. That would be tough.”

Sanders, who previously expressed in a 2022 60 Minutes interview that he had no desire to coach in the NFL, did offer a slight exception earlier this year, stating to Good Morning America that the only way he would consider the move would be to coach his sons. “Not son. Sons,” Sanders clarified, referring to his two children who are both highly involved in football.

Despite reports of discussions between Sanders and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the Cowboys ultimately chose offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach, leaving Sanders firmly in place at Colorado.

Under Sanders, Colorado has shown tremendous improvement, with a strong 9-4 record in his second season, capped off by Travis Hunter’s Heisman Trophy win. Colorado’s performance was a massive jump from the 1-11 record they posted just before Sanders arrived.

With an impressive 40-18 record as a college head coach, including a successful three-season stint at Jackson State, Sanders’ career at the collegiate level is far from over. However, 2025 will bring new challenges for Sanders as he faces a roster overhaul with both his sons, quarterback Shedeur and defensive back Shilo, preparing for the NFL alongside Travis Hunter.

For now, it’s clear that Sanders is focused on building on his success at Colorado, keeping his eyes on the future in college football, not the NFL.
