Kellen Moore Named Head Coach of the New Orleans Saints Following Super Bowl Victory

The New Orleans Saints have officially found their new head coach, hiring Kellen Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. This announcement comes just days after Moore helped guide the Eagles to a dominant 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.

The 36-year-old Moore, who is known for his offensive prowess, led the Eagles to impressive rankings in 2024, finishing seventh in scoring offense (27.2 points per game) and eighth in total offense (367.2 yards per game).

His system helped free-agent acquisition Saquon Barkley achieve a historic season, leading the NFL in both rushing yards (2,005) and scrimmage yards (2,283), making him only the ninth player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season.

Now, Moore will turn his attention to the Saints and quarterback Derek Carr, aiming to unlock the full potential of the four-time Pro Bowler, who is set to be 34 years old at the start of the 2025 season.

Carr’s 2024 campaign was hampered by injury, including a fracture in his non-throwing hand, which caused him to miss seven games. Despite Carr’s absence, New Orleans managed a 5-5 record in his starts but struggled in the games played by backup quarterbacks, ending the season at 5-12.

Moore’s rise from NFL player to head coach has been swift and impressive. After going undrafted in 2012, Moore began his NFL career as a backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions before joining the Dallas Cowboys, where he backed up Tony Romo and Dak Prescott.

Moore retired from playing in 2018 and quickly transitioned into coaching, becoming Prescott’s quarterbacks coach that same year. By 2019, Moore was promoted to offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, a role he held until 2023. His offenses were consistently among the top 10 in the NFL during his time in Dallas, with a particularly standout season in 2021 when the Cowboys led the league in scoring offense.

Moore’s first head coaching opportunity comes with the Saints at a challenging time. Despite their recent struggles, including failing to make the playoffs since 2021, the Saints have the ninth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

However, the franchise faces financial hurdles, as they are $59.5 million over the cap for the upcoming season, according to OverTheCap.com. With limited cap space and a challenging roster situation, Moore will need to work with a team that is not fully equipped to contend immediately but has a solid foundation to build on.

The New Orleans Saints are hoping that Moore’s offensive expertise and leadership will turn the franchise around and set them on the path to future success.
