Lions Hire John Morton as Offensive Coordinator, Marking Major Staff Change

The Detroit Lions have officially hired John Morton as their new offensive coordinator, finalizing the move Tuesday after reports surfaced on Monday that the deal was in the works.

Morton returns to Detroit after previously serving as a senior offensive assistant with the team in 2022. He will replace Ben Johnson, who recently accepted the head coach position with the Chicago Bears. Morton, who has spent the last two years as the Broncos’ pass game coordinator, brings a wealth of experience from his time with the Raiders, Jets, Saints, and 49ers.

Along with the hiring of Morton, the Lions have also brought in Kelvin Sheppard as the team’s new defensive coordinator. This marks the beginning of several key staff changes as Detroit undergoes its first significant coaching overhaul since head coach Dan Campbell’s arrival in 2021. With new leadership on both sides of the ball, the Lions are setting the stage for a fresh chapter in their pursuit of success.
