Patriots Overhaul Coaching Staff, Bring Back Josh McDaniels and Hire Terrell Williams as New Coordinators
The New England Patriots have made significant changes to their coaching staff following another disappointing 4-13 season, marking their second consecutive year of struggle.
The most notable shift came at the head coach position, where Mike Vrabel took over from Jerod Mayo, who was let go after the team’s Week 18 win in 2024. Along with the change at the top, the Patriots also brought in two new coordinators to help revamp the team.
Returning to familiar territory is Josh McDaniels, who has rejoined the Patriots as offensive coordinator for his third stint with the team. McDaniels previously held the role in New England from 2006-2008 and again from 2012 to 2021.
On NBC Sports Boston’s Next Pats Podcast, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero shared insights into the Patriots’ decision to bring McDaniels back into the fold.
“Josh McDaniels was somebody that, from the ownership level, they really wanted to get re-involved in the program a year ago,” Pelissero explained.
“They might have been willing to bring him in at that point, but he was still fresh off the Raiders situation (fired as head coach on Oct. 31, 2023). Now, bringing him back to work alongside someone he respects, Mike Vrabel, makes a lot of sense.”
Pelissero went on to emphasize McDaniels’ proven track record, particularly his success with quarterbacks, which the Patriots are hoping will reignite their offensive production.
In addition to McDaniels, the Patriots made another key hire by bringing in Terrell Williams as the new defensive coordinator, replacing DeMarcus Covington.
Williams, who impressed as the Lions’ defensive line coach, will step into a coordinator role for the first time in his career. Pelissero noted that Williams has garnered a strong reputation within the league, with Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell praising his work at training camp.
“Terrell Williams is a guy people don’t know as well, but I remember having a conversation with Dan Campbell last year,” Pelissero said. “Campbell was really excited about him. He was like, ‘That dude is such a stud. He’s brought so much to the team.'”
Williams, who previously worked with Vrabel, will now be tasked with leading the Patriots’ defense. Pelissero added that Vrabel’s involvement in all aspects of the team will ensure that Williams receives the guidance he needs as he takes on this new role.
With these coaching changes, the Patriots are clearly focused on rebuilding and preparing for a more successful 2025 season.
